Artist Statement
The sculptures, books, and drawings I create incorporate Victorian ornamentation, characteristics of botanical gardens, and the organic forms/spaces present in stories as well as fairytales. Through these influences my organic objects border between the familiar and the fantastical. A loose narrative is woven throughout that reflects and reinterprets my experiences, thoughts, and memories.
I am fascinated with and use Victorian-era ornamental designs because they are man-made two-dimensional patterns referencing three-dimensional natural objects. By combining a reinterpretation of these patterns with my own observations of the small, incremental, and cyclical changes within my gardens, a new imagined environment balanced loosely on the organic and man-made materializes that absorbs the balance between stasis/change as well as that between visual and actual organization/ chaos.
Stories and fairytales transform the natural world we know in order to present a new view of it and our experiences within it. I translate this idea by using familiar elements of flora yet are not based specifically on one plant, shifting scales and textures, and using text.
All of my work is mixed media. My sculptures use fabric as the main medium mainly for its tactile qualities, colors, and its characteristic for easily transforming into organic forms. I approach my works in a similar fashion to the way I organize my gardens. There is a gradual unfolding and each builds upon the one before. Each sculpture, book, or drawing is viewed separately yet together they create a new environment. I am drawn to process oriented techniques with a focus on how the tactility and juxtaposition of the media transforms the concepts and objects. My experiences and influences are incorporated into my studio practice and brought to fruition through what I create.
